WHOIS is a protocol which makes it possible to view the information a specific domain name has been registered with either through a command line or using special web-based lookup sites. This information includes the names, address and email address of the owner, administrator, technical and billing persons in addition to the registrar business the domain address has been obtained through, the creation and expiration dates. With the exception of some country-code TLDs that have certain limitations, the WHOIS info of any domain address can be edited freely whenever you want, which is quite necessary given that according to the policies of the top-level Internet Corporation, ICANN, all details ought to be current and correct all of the time. Failing to comply with these policies could lead to losing the ownership of a domain name and in some cases a domain could even be erased from the Domain Name System and released for free registration.
